Niko Resources Ltd. (Niko) is committed to ensuring the safety and health of our staff, and contractors, regulatory compliance, and demonstrating a high level of social and environmental responsibility in all its activities.

 

S Y N O P S I S

Niko Resources Ltd. has been progressively implementing its Safety, Health, Environmental and Social Program (SHESP) over the past four years. Coincident with this has been the education of its core field personnel and staffing of key positions to ensure effective implementation of relevant corporate policies and procedures.

 

The SHESP system is fully implemented in India and Bangladesh. Current efforts are focused on improving the safety of its operations, ensuring Niko's activities result in a net socio-economic benefit to the communities in which it does business and embracing opportunities to improve the environmental sustainability of its operations.

Niko employs a workforce of approximately 394. Percentage female employment ranges between 7% and 42% across it operations, and 9% overall (Table 1).

• Advanced First Aid Training - 6 employees

• Food Safety Training - 3 employees

• Noise Awareness Training - 26 employees

• Heat Awareness Training - 60 employees

• Ergonomics Awareness Training - 15 employees

• AIDS Awareness Training - 77 employees

 

Bangladesh

• Health and Safety Auditor Course - 1 employee

• Level I Elementary First Aid - 30 employees

• Defensive Driver Training - 22 employees

• HSE Supervisor Training - 3 employees

Niko’s employees and contractors worked in excess of 1,160,996 hours in 2006 and recorded four (4) Lost Time Incidents (Table 2). No fatalities have occurred as a result of any Niko activity since its inception in 1994.

• Pulse Polio Vaccine camps (2) for nearby villagers (247 vaccinations)

• Donated AQUA GUARD systems (2) for provision of safe drinking water to two local schools

• Construction of water tank for Hazira School

• Constructed Emergency Response Community Camp in Surat following flooding (>100 families benefited)

• Sponsored community-based coastal mangrove rehabilitation program (100 ha coastal area)

Bangladesh

• Approximately 2800 trees as part of ongoing rehabilitation

• Upgrade of two rural school computers for student use

• Provision of free doctor services to local villagers (770 patient visits)

• Constructed water wells and distribution system (110 families)
